Pine Township man worked in Barkeyville
Roger Dale "Ben" Franklin, 1128 Barkeyville Road, Pine Township, formerly of Barkeyville, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday (11-5-00) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, following a brief illness. He was 46.
Mr. Franklin was born Nov. 20, 1953, in Oil City to Groner and Clarabelle Franklin.
He was a shop foreman since 1996 at Travel Centers of America, Barkeyville; and previously worked for Franklin Steel in Franklin.
The Protestant was a member of Clintonville Fire Department, for which he was a past captain.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Harriet L. "Holly" King, whom he married Nov. 27, 1981; three daughters, Tiffany Cramer, Mercer; and Cindy Manning and Tori Franklin Pettit, both Franklin; four sons, Jason, Emlenton, Venango County; Shawn, Seneca, Venango County; Scott, Mercer; and Chad Tarr, Reno, Venango County; two sisters, Penny Tarr; and Jeanette Kiser, Tippery, Pa.; a brother, the Rev. Leonard Franklin, Oil City; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

76 Mercer grad, homemaker belonged to Immaculate Heart
Jeanne M. Sherman Kish, 339 W. Market St., Mercer, died unexpectedly at 1:04 a.m. Monday (11-6-00) in St. Francis Hospital, New Castle, following an apparent heart attack. She was 43.
Mrs. Kish was born April 5, 1957, in Sharon to Darvin T. and Margery E. Brown Sherman.
The 1976 alumna of Mercer High School graduated from Shenango Valley Commercial Institute.
Mrs. Kish was previously employed by Greenwood Pharmacy, Mercer.
A homemaker, she was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer.
Surviving are: her husband, Robert W. Kish, whom she married Feb. 14, 1981; and a son, John Joseph, both at home; her mother, Mercer; and three brothers, Joseph P., Daniel T. and John M. Sherman, all Mercer.
She was preceded in death by her father.

Westinghouse retiree was member of St. Barts church
Funeral Mass will be Thursday for Mack Kusmus, 529 Pierce Ave., Sharpsville. He died at 4:35 p.m. Sunday (11-5-00) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 88.
Mr. Kusmus was born Jan. 23, 1912, in Aliquippa to John and Anna Bensak Kusmus.
He retired in 1964 after more than 30 years from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
Mr. Kusmus belonged to St. Bartholomews Church, Sharpsville; and was a former member of the Sharpsville Beagle Club.
The outdoorsman enjoyed hunting and fishing.
His wife, the former Mary Rescek, whom he married June 16, 1934, died April 9, 1995.
Surviving are: a son, Stephen J., Sharpsville; and three grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Burwell; a sister, Lillian Raich; and a brother, Stephen.

Helen Opalenik, State Line Road, Shenango Township, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday (11-6-00) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 87.
Mrs. Opalenik was born Jan. 18, 1913, in Sharpsville to Joseph and Mary Brindza Sekerak.
She attended Charleston and Bethel schools, Charleston area.
A homemaker, Mrs. Opalenik was a former member of St. Johns Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Sharon; and belonged to Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.
She enjoyed traveling, including abroad.
Mrs. Opalenik was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.
Her husband John Opalenik, whom she married Feb. 19, 1931, died Oct. 3, 1977.
Surviving are: four daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Dee) Grodecki, Hermitage; Mrs. Edward (Elaine) Greene, West Middlesex; Mrs. Jack (Judy) Hennigan, Town Creek, Ala.; and Mrs. Marty (Elizabeth Opalenik) Martinez, Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Stephen J., Shenango Township; and Paul E., Birmingham, Ohio; a sister, Martha Myers, Wooster, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John R.; two grandsons, Tony Grodecki and Eddie Greene; a great-grandson, Jacob Lewis; five brothers, infants George and Joseph; and Joseph, John and Michael Sekerak; and four sisters, infant Susan; Kathryn Withrow, Mary Petak and Ann Anderson.

Outdoorsman, craftsman was LTV retiree, lived in Hubbard
Private funeral services were Monday morning (11-6-00) for Edward L. Smelko, 3358 Schotten Road, Hubbard. He died of cancer Friday evening (11-3-00) in his home. He was 70.
Mr. Smelko was born Jan. 14, 1930, in Hubbard to Albert and Christina Fedders Smelko. He was a lifelong Hubbard resident.
Mr. Smelko retired in 1979 after 22 years as a welder with LTV Steel, Youngstown.
The National Rifle Association member was an avid outdoorsman. He also was a skilled craftsman working with wood and metal.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary A. Briody, whom he married July 7, 1951; two sons, Edward Jr., Chassahowitzka, Fla.; and Alan, Brooksville, Fla.; a daughter, Carolyn Blasko, New Middletown, Ohio; a brother, Albert, Helena, Mont.; and nine grandchildren.
Three sisters, Martha Dufford, Elizabeth Todut and Vivien Oyler; and two brothers, Robert and Sylvester, preceded him in death.

Funeral will be Friday for Mary Tubbs, 1032 Emerson Ave., Farrell. She died at 3:55 p.m. Sunday (11-5-00) in Orange Village Care Center, Masury, following a lengthy illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Tubbs was born Jan. 6, 1915, in Safford Ala., to Tucker and Florence McMillen Young.
As a member of Community Missionary Baptist Church, Farrell, she was a church mother, usher and choir member, and served on the church building fund committee.
Her husband, Joseph Tubbs, died March 13, 1970.
Surviving are: her daughter-in-law and caregiver, Estella Tubbs, Sharon; a niece, Loveretta Williams, Pittsburgh, whom she reared; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, George H.; a daughter, Lavolia; and a sister, Helen Scott.
