Butler man had sister living in Slippery Rock
Clarence "Pappy" Raymond Carr, East Brandon Road, Butler, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday (12-31-00) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 78.
Mr. Carr was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Virginia to Leonard Lubert and Pearl J. Guesman Carr.
He retired on a disability from building construction. Prior to that he worked at Allegheny Steel Co., Tarentum, Pa.
Mr. Carr was of the Protestant faith.
His wife, the former Betty Everson, is deceased.
Surviving are: a stepson, Sam Everson, Cresson, Pa.; and three sisters, Gladys Crocker, Slippery Rock; Lillian Smith, Cabot, Pa.; and Mrs. Delmar (Norma Jean) Shilling, Butler.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Cypher, and two brothers, Virgil and Robert Carr.

Mrs. Currie was born Jan. 9, 1899, in Fairview Township to Frank and Myra Runkle McDowell.
An alumna of Grove City High School, she attended Westminster College, New Wilmington.
She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon, and its senior citizens group. She was a former member of Coolspring Presbyterian Church, which she served for many years as a Sunday pianist.
Mrs. Currie was a life member and past matron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 180, Mercer. She was a past worthy high priestess of White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 8, Sharon.
A charter member of the 50 Year Club of National Society of the American Revolution, she was a past regent of Pymatuning Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her husband, Earl Currie, whom she married Oct. 9, 1934, died Sept. 20, 1972.
Surviving are: her great-nieces and caregivers, Mrs. Wilmer (Pat) Needels and Mrs. Anthony (Carol) Daniello, both Greenville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Anson McDowell, in 1968, and David McDowell, in 1989.

Mr. Gawne was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Mercer to Philip and Wilheimina Dahn Gawne.
He retired after many years as a bookkeeper for Clinch-Tite Corp., Sandy Lake.
He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Mercer.
Mr. Gawne enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are: his wife the former Margaret "Peg" L. Shank, whom he married April 23, 1946; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald B. (Kimberly) Mealy, Corry, Pa.; two brothers, Ellsworth "Toad" and Russell, both of Mercer; and two grandchildren.

A 1945 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage, Mrs. Kelly retired in 1980 after 10 years as a waitress at the Shenango Inn, Sharon, when it was a hotel and restaurant. Prior to that she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Kelly was a member of Sharpsville Church of the Nazarene and she enjoyed genealogy.

Electrical engineer was an accomplished banjo player
Funeral will be today for Michael Kohut, 900 Third Ave., Beaver Falls. He died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday (12-31-00) in Providence Care Center, Beaver Falls. He was 93.
Mr. Kohut was born Aug. 5, 1907, in Austria-Hungary to Michael Kohut and Katherine Steransak.
Mr. Kohut graduated in 1940 from Tri State University, Angola, Ind., with a degree in electrical engineering.
Mr. Kohut also studied arranging and counterpoint in 1935 at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and was an accomplished banjo player.
He worked as an electrical engineer at the former Mercer Tubular, Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Corp., and Michael Baker Engineering Co. He retired in 1980 from Shippenport atomic plant near Pittsburgh.
Surviving are: three sisters, Helen Salae, New Wilmington; Margaret Dulaney, Masury; and Irene Schaller, Pulaski; and two brothers, Andrew Kohut, Farrell; and William Kohut, Sharon.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kohut and Pauline Palazzini, and two brothers, Joseph and John Kohut.

Bernice Althea Myers, Kansas City, Mo., formerly of 319 Mitchell Road, Shenango Township, died Friday (12-29-00) at home after a short illness. She was 83.
Mrs. Myers was born May 28, 1917, in Pulaski Township, Lawrence County, to Clifford Hall and Ethel Snyder Smith.
She attended school through eighth grade.
A homemaker, she was a member of Shenango Presbyterian Church, New Castle, where she served as an elder and was a member of its Bible study group and Women of Shenango Church.
Mrs. Myers belonged to West Middlesex Woman's Club and Where the Corners Meet quilting group at New Wilmington Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Wilson Morton "Fuzzy" Myers, whom she married July 8, 1946, died in August 1990.
Surviving are: a son, James W., Kansas City; three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Beverly M.) Webb, New York Mills, N.Y.; Mrs. Jim (Darlene) Lott, Chesapeake, Va.; and Mrs. Tom (Althea "Jo") Nelson, Liberty, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Nitch was born July 28, 1948, in Sharon to John and Pearl Sabo Nitch.
The Sharpsville High School alumnus served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Nitch was a repairman with Chamber Doors, Hot Springs.

Retiree was WWII veteran, teacher and scoutmaster
MINERAL RIDGE, Ohio -- Michael Pirko, Bianco Avenue, McKinley Heights, Niles, Ohio, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday (12-29-00) in Glenn View Manor Nursing Home after a two-month illness. He was 79.
Mr. Pirko was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Niles to Andrew and Mary Hawrylak Pirko.
He graduated in 1939 from Niles McKinley High School and attended Youngstown State University.
Mr. Pirko was a lifelong resident of McKinley Heights and retired in 1980 as general foreman in the open hearth department of U.S. Steel Co., Ohio Works, Youngstown, where he worked for 30 years.
He held several industrial management positions in the area and began a second career as a refrigeration and electronics instructor at New Castle School of Trades; and ATES and ETI Technical schools, both Niles. He retired in 1996.
A Navy veteran, Mr. Pirko served as a petty officer first class on a minesweeper with the invasion fleets liberating North Africa, Sicily and Italy during World War II. He served in the Pacific fleet on a troop transport in Indochina and China, earning a Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Medal with four stars, African European Middle Eastern Medal, American Area Medal, Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Pirko also served in the Naval Reserves during the Korean conflict.
He served as a scoutmaster for Troops 35 and 31 of Boy Scouts of America, Niles. He was also active in Cub Scout Pack 39 for several years and was an amateur radio explorer post adviser.
Mr. Pirko was a charter member of McKinley Heights Mutual Benefit Association.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Phyllis Rose Adams, whom he married May 25, 1950; five sons, James, Butler; Richard, Southington, Ohio; Thomas, Chesterland, Ohio; Michael, Poland, Ohio; and Charles, Niles; two sisters, Ann Kuzman and Catherine Graffius, both of Niles; and two brothers, Nick Pirko, Temple Terrace, Fla.; and John Pierko, Niles.

Mrs. Pryor was born Oct. 9, 1914, in Greenville to George and Edna Snyder Swartzbeck.
She graduated in 1932 from the former Penn High School, Greenville.
A 70-year member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon also belonged to its United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Pryor also was a member of the Dames of Malta and the Sharpsville Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed working in her garden with flowers and treasured her time teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are: her husband, Kenneth J. Pryor, whom she married Aug. 8, 1932; two daughters, Gladys J. Cramer, Masury; and Norma Jean Pettitt, Sharon; a sister, Roseanne Gosser, Greenville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was retired, but had previously worked as a cook at the Village Inn of Harlansburg and Eppingers' Restaurant, U.S. Route 19, Butler County, and had also done cleaning locally at various residences and businesses.
Mrs. Robinson was a member of Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church, Worth Township, Butler County.
Her husband, Walter Melvin, whom she married Feb. 4, 1945, died Feb. 4, 1976.

Mr. Roman was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Wheatland to Roman and Maria Nicula Roman.
He retired as a tester in the H Aisle of the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
The Army veteran was a former member of Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church, Hermitage.
His wife, the former Mildred Vojtko, is deceased.

Nancy Shultz, 88 Mitchell Road, Shenango Township, died at 9:05 a.m. Monday (1-1-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a lengthy illness. She was 70.
Mrs. Shultz was born Feb. 20, 1930, in Pittsburgh to Alden and Elsie Horner Traver.
A homemaker, she was a member of United Methodist Church, Parker.
Surviving are: her husband, William Leonard Shultz Sr., whom she married Nov. 28, 1948; four daughters, Nancy Getsay, West Middlesex; Mrs. Larry (Jennifer) McCord, Bulger, Pa.; Carol AnnShultz, Lackawannock Township; and Jane McClelland, Mesa, Ariz.; a son, William L. Shultz Jr., West Middlesex; her mother, Mesa; and a sister, Jane Fee, Fort Myers, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Scotland native leaves 170 survivors
Mamie Georgina Harris Asqueth Norris Wilson Masson Sidley, died at 12:53 p.m. Monday (1-1-01) in Woodland Place, Coolspring Township. She was 104.
Mrs. Sidley was born June 30, 1896, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Robert and Jeanie Forrest Norris.
She came to America with her mother and sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, in 1908, and was a housekeeper for H.G. McClelland and a cook for the former Gyler Restaurant, both Mercer.
The member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, was a past member of Betsy Ann Ross Rebekah Lodge 450, Mercer, and Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Mrs. Sidley loved Scotland and enjoyed traveling, entertaining, flower gardening and playing cards.
Her first, second and third husbands, George Wilson, John F. Masson and Reid B. Sidley, respectively, are deceased.
Surviving are: two stepsons, Joe Masson, Mercer; and Paul Masson, Franklin; a stepdaughter, Frances Masson Tyne, Lakeland, Fla.; a granddaughter; 45 stepgrandchildren; 107 stepgreat-grandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Nelson; 13 stepchildren; two stepgrandchildren; an infant brother; and two sisters, Mary Norris and Elizabeth Mackie.

Former Farrell man was veteran of Korean War
Ronald Simpson of Ickesburg, Pa., formerly of Farrell, died Wednesday (12-27-00) in Carlisle (Pa.) Hospital. He was 70.
Mr. Simpson was born May 24, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio.
He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.
He was a commercial truck driver.
Mr. Simpson attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ickesburg.
Surviving are: his wife, E. Betty Simpson; three daughters, Emma Helm, Port Royal, Pa.; Mable Marie Master, Punxsutawney; and Catherine Navarro, Kings Mountain, N.C.; a son, Ronald Simpson, Ickesburg; a stepson Roger A. Gum, Columbus, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Sheryl Ann Gulla, Port Jervis, N.Y.; and Sharon Rose Shannon, Sharon; a brother, Oscar Simpson, West Middlesex; two sisters, Lennie Koster, Englewood, Ohio; and Rose Clearwater, Gold City, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
