Elizabeth A. Wettstein Black
Retired seamstress was nurse’s aide at Bashline

Funeral will be Thursday for Elizabeth A. Wettstein Black, Orchard Manor, Pine Township, formerly of Barkeyville Road, Pine Township. She died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in the emergency room of United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 84.

Mrs. Black was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Pittsburgh to J.C. and Anna Thompson.

She retired as a seamstress from Palmer Smith; and was previously a nurse’s aide for the former Bashline Hospital, both Grove City.

Mrs. Black was a Protestant.

Her husband, Homer A. Black, whom she married Aug. 23, 1934, died Sept. 5, 1978.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. A.J. (Virginia) Lucas and Mrs. John (Marilyn) Young, both Grove City; two sons, Homer Jr., Grove City; and Richard, Franklin; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchild-ren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Candace Young.

Suzanne Brown
Former legal secretary was First Presbyterian member

Suzanne Brown, 534 N. Buhl Blvd., Sharon, died at 9:03 p.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, following an extended illness. She was 70.

Miss Brown was born April 28, 1930, in Homestead, Pa., to Dr. Walter E. Brown and Mildred Rankin Brown.

A 1948 alumna of Taylor-Allderdice High School, Pittsburgh, she attended Grove City College and was a legal secretary in Pittsburgh prior to her illness.

Miss Brown moved in 1964 to the Sharon area, where she was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a brother, Dr. Matthew G. Brown, Sharon; and a sister, Mrs. Ned J. (Ruth) Drake, Roseville, Calif.

Robert L. Chappel
Retiree was Army veteran, had daughter in Mercer

WARREN, Pa. -- Robert L. Chappel, West Hickory, Pa., died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in Beverly Health Care Center-Kinzua Valley. He was 79.

Mr. Chappel was born April 25, 1921, in Endeavor, Pa., to George and Effie Rudolph Chappel.

He retired in 1983 as a tool and die designer from National Forge, Irvine, Pa.

An Army veteran, Mr. Chappel served during World War II.

He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Olive Lodge 557, Tionesta, Pa.

Following retirement, Mr. Chappel enjoyed golfing.

His wife, the former Helen "Betty" FitzGerald, died in 1979.

Surviving are: a son, David G., East Hickory, Pa.; three daughters, Marsha E., Mercer; Mrs. Jack (Susan) Moore, Warren; and Polly, Tionesta; a companion, Eleanor O’Neil, Oil City; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, John Allan, who died in 1978; and Robert L. II, who died in 1981; two brothers, Jack and Donald; and a sister, Mary Jane Howe.

Harrisville-area homemaker was born in Venango County

Mary S. Evans, Harrisville RD 2, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 96.

Mrs. Evans was born April 7, 1904, in Venango County to Oren A. and Margaret Etta Martin Ray.

She attended the former Jones School, Venango County; and Grove City High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Evans was a member of Peters Chapel United Methodist Church, Irwin Township, Venango County; and Harmony Grove Quilting Group.

She previously attended the senior group at Scrubgrass Grange, Venango County.

Her husband, William J. Evans, whom she married June 28, 1922, died Nov. 5, 1982.

Surviving are: three sons, Roy W., Palm Springs, Calif.; Richard L., Harrisville; and Jack T., Erie; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Martin D.; a great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Wilbur E. and Seaton J. Ray.

Raymond Leroy Furey
Reznor worker belonged to Mercer church, Moose lodge

Raymond Leroy Furey, 320 Home St., Mercer, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday (6-11-00) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 61.

Mr. Furey was born Dec. 25, 1938, in Mercer to Raymond Lamont and Mary Connell Furey.

The alumnus of Mercer High School was a fabricator for Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts Corp., Mercer.

Mr. Furey was a member of Mercer United Methodist Church; Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1637, Mercer; and previously belonged to East End Fire Department.

He enjoyed hunting and was a member of National Rifle Association.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Forrest (Mary Etta) White, Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alberta M. Henderson
Pine Township woman was native of Oil City

Funeral will be Wednesday for Alberta M. Henderson, 1460 Carrie Way, Pine Township. She died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. She was 93.

Mrs. Henderson was born Nov. 16, 1906, in Oil City to John and Margaret Bailey Morgan.

She was formerly employed by Bell Telephone Co., Oil City and Pittsburgh.

Her husband, Freeland Henderson, whom she married Aug. 12, 1946, died Nov. 11, 1986.

Surviving are: a stepdaughter, Glorianna Holtman, Pittsburgh; two sisters, Mary Ellen Ward, Grove City; and Marguerite Brown, Westfield, N.Y.; five stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gleason, Jack and Paul Morgan; and a sister, Florence Spencer.

Elnora Marie Morris McGary
Farmer was retired manager of New Wilmington Agway

NEW CASTLE -- Elnora Marie Morris McGary, 2981 Mercer Road, New Castle, formerly of Fayette Village, Volant, died at 12:48 p.m. Sunday (6-11-00) in the hospital of Jameson Health System following a brief illness. She was 85.

Mrs. McGary was born April 27, 1915, in Neshannock Township, Lawrence County to Bryan J. and Margaret J. Fobes Morris.

A 1933 alumna of New Castle High School, she graduated from New Castle Business College and served on her high school class reunion committee.

Mrs. McGary was employed by Volant Bank and previously worked for Marvin Electric Co., New Castle.

She was a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church, Volant.

She and her husband, Samuel Wilford McGary, whom she married June 28, 1941, were farmers and retired as joint managers of New Wilmington Agway. He died April 17, 1991.

Surviving is a brother, Clifford L. Morris, New Castle.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gayle Anne, who died in 1945.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Funeral will be Tuesday for Doris M. Miller, Bay Village, formerly of 715 Koonce Road, Hermitage. She died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in Bradley Nursing Home. She was 92.

Mrs. Miller was born April 23, 1908, in Sharon to J. Fred and Anna Margaret Swavey Shartle.

A 1926 alumna of Sharon High School, she was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 242 in Sharon, where she served as a past worthy matron.

Mrs. Miller was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church, Sharon.

Her husband, Harold M. Miller, whom she married Aug. 11, 1928, died Aug. 15, 1988.

Surviving are: two grandsons, Thomas E. Dills, Charlotte, N.C; and Robert C. Dills, Avon Lake, Ohio; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn A. Dills; and two sisters, Dorothy Shartle and Ruth S. Scott.

McCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, ALLEGHENY COUNTY -- Ruth A. Schirck, Valencia Woods, Pa., formerly of Hubbard, died at 3:40 a.m. Saturday (6-10-00) in UPMC Passavant of complications from surgery. She was 81.

Mrs. Schirck was born July 4, 1918, in Canton, Ohio, to Theodore and Mary Scanlon Kimberly.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Hubbard; and its Altar and Rosary Society, Legion of Mary and Sacred Heart Auxiliary.

Her husband, Phillip M. Schirck, whom she married June 21, 1947, died Nov. 9, 1986.

Surviving are: a son, Dr. Phillip M. Schirck, Rochester, N.Y.; four daughters, Mrs. Irv (Anne) Kravitz, Boardman, Ohio; Mrs. Andrew (Ruthie) Frydrych, Mercer; Mrs. William (Mary Pat) Stechschulte, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Mrs. Daniel (Phyllis) Flynn, Mars., Pa.; a brother, Paul Kimberly, Detroit; four sisters, Judy Kimberly, Detroit; Mary Beth Kabat, Boston; and Patricia Mason and Dorothy Flynn, both Ocala, Fla.; and 19 grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Phyllis; a brother, Theodore Kimberly; and a sister, Betty Kimberly.

William S. ‘Fred’ Varro
GATX retiree co-owned Sharon motorcycle shop

William S. "Fred" Varro, 538 Dwyer St., Sharon, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday (6-10-00) at home following an extended illness. He was 73.

Mr. Varro was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Farrell to Daniel and Elizabeth Kish Varro.

He attended Farrell area schools and retired in 1982 after 30 years from General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant, where he was a railroad car assembler. Mr. Varro was also co-owner with his brother, Daniel, of Harley-Davidson, Sharon, the first store of its kind in the Shenango Valley.

He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II and attended East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ), Sharon.

A motorcycle enthusiast, Mr. Varro enjoyed fixing Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Surviving are: a former wife, Norma Shaffer Skrycki, Hermitage; two sons, William S. Jr., Sharon; and Michael James, Hermitage; two sisters, Emma Scott, Youngstown; and Ida Chirazzi, New Castle; a brother, Charles, Cleveland; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides his brother, Daniel, he was preceded in death by a brother, John.
