Richard C. ‘Pete’ Anderson
New Castle man was Army veteran, active in sports

NEW CASTLE -- Richard C. "Pete" Anderson, 1015 Rebecca St., New Castle, died Saturday morning (7-29-00) in the hospital of Jameson Health System of heart failure. He was 53.

Mr. Anderson was born Dec. 2, 1946, in New Castle to Raymond and Daisy Davis Anderson.

He retired from the former Axle Division of Rockwell International, New Castle; and was a former employee of LTV Steel Corp., Youngstown.

An Army veteran, Mr. Anderson served during the Vietnam conflict.

He was a member of Agape Deliverance Ministry, New Castle.

Mr. Anderson was active in sports; in his earlier years he played football and baseball locally.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Candice Harrison, whom he married Sept. 29, 1973; three daughters, Davida Booker and Jamie, both of New Castle; and Tara, Columbus, Ohio; four sons, Shawn and Craig; Jason Montgomery; and Joseph Earl, all of New Castle; a sister, Christine Ann Wiley, Harrisburg; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis Jackson; four brothers, Kenneth, Robert, Joseph and Raymond.

Betty L. Hess
Shenango Twp. woman was cook at local diner, VFW

Betty L. Hess, 14 Oak Leaf Estates, Shenango Township, formerly of Mercer-West Middlesex Road, Lackawannock Township, died unexpectedly at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (7-30-00) at home. She was 77.

Mrs. Hess was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Sharon to Joseph F. and Aurelia E.K. Shaffer Jennings.

She attended Hickory High School, Hermitage, and was a cook for 20 years until 1982 at West Middlesex Diner. After that, Mrs. Hess was a cook until 1995 for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex.

She attended Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township, and belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 6233 and Women’s Degree of Honor, both West Middlesex.

Mrs. Hess enjoyed needlepoint and crocheting.

Her husband, Daniel O. Hess, whom she married Feb. 19, 1944, died June 20, 1986.

Surviving are: two sons, Daniel J. Hess Sr., Lackawannock Township; and Donald G., New Wilmington; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Shelhamer and Theda McConnell; and three brothers, Paul, Harold and Russell Jennings.

Margaret Louise "Babe" Peluso, formerly of 4002 Hermitage Hills, Hermitage, died at 11:28 p.m. Saturday (7-29-00) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 85.

Mrs. Peluso was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Dale and Nora Davies Hill.

A homemaker, she was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

Her husband, Joseph F. Peluso, whom she married April 23, 1931, died Nov. 5, 1996.

Surviving are a niece and nephew, Beverly Devorak and David Ruhl, both of Pittsburgh.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve H. Ruhl, and a brother, William R. Hill.

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Jack R. Russell, 302 North St., Jamestown, Pa, died at 1:57 p.m. Friday (7-28-00) in Wheeling Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 44.

Mr. Russell was born April 26, 1956, in Rangoon, Burma, to John Edward and Margaret Russell.

He was owner of Russell’s Auto Body, Jamestown.

Mr. Russell was a member of Jamestown Lions Club and Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Deb Collins, whom he married June 26, 1981, of 180 Halfway Road, Jamestown; his mother, also of Jamestown; a son, Jake; and a daughter, Jamie, both at home; three brothers, Joseph, Greenville; Winston, Jamestown; and John Jr., Transfer; and four sisters, Rosaling Marin and Anne Brown, both of Slatington, Pa.; June Koehne, Nashville, Tenn.; and Caroline, Conneaut Lake.

Findley Township man was veteran, Slippery Rock native

Charles L. "Dutch" Smith, 1655 Scrubgrass Road, Findley Township, formerly of Slippery Rock, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday (7-28-00) in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness. He was 51.

Mr. Smith was born July 22, 1949, in Reidsburg, Pa., to Charles L. and Geraldine L. Rifenberrick Smith.

A 1967 alumnus of Slippery Rock High School, he served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict, where he became disabled.

Mr. Smith was affiliated with Center Presbyterian Church, Slippery Rock.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Disabled American Veterans and Moraine Sportsmen’s Club.

Surviving are: his second wife, the former Cathy Jo Ginter, whom he married in December 1990; a daughter, Megan Jaye Rowe, Butler; his mother, Geraldine Durso, and a sister, Bonita J. Rennick, both Slippery Rock; and his first wife, the former Diane Albert, whom he married in July 1970.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Kenneth.

Mrs. Thompson was born July 19, 1920, in Edinburg to Robert Dell and Lillian Wilson Cameron.

The alumna of Union High School, New Castle, was a member of Degree of Honor and enjoyed walking and bike riding.

A homemaker, Mrs. Thompson was a member of Pulaski Presbyterian Church and its Dorcas Circle.

She and her husband, Arthur Kirk Thompson, whom she married Dec. 6, 1939, spent winters in Florida for 15 years.

Surviving besides her husband are: two sons, Robert F., Pulaski; and Melvin K., New Castle; two daughters, Sherry A. Smith, Pulaski; and Judy L. Elder, New Wilmington; a sister, Naomi Mann, New Castle; three brothers, Joseph Cameron, Pulaski; and William and Paul Cameron, both New Castle; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jamie, in 1985; two sisters, Virginia Smith and Mildred Snyder; and four brothers, Russell, Jack, Gerald and Arthur Cameron.
