Grove City homemaker was AARP, senior center member

Shirley Jane Aiken, 301 S. Broad St., Grove City, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday (8-7-00) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was 72.

Mrs. Aiken was born July 6, 1928, in Rossiter, Pa., to Clair F. and Irene M. Kunselman Smith.

She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian.

Mrs. Aiken was a member of AARP, the retired persons organization; and Senior Citizens Center of Grove City.

She enjoyed crafts, bingo, gardening, flowers, bird watching and bird feeding.

Her husband, Wilmer C. Aiken, whom she married in 1946, died in 1996.

Surviving are: two sons, Michael L. and Gary L., both Grove City; a daughter, Donna J. Kammerdiener, Grove City; a brother, William D. Smith, Emlenton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Merle, Lloyd and Gerald Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Norman M. (Louise) Sloat and Mrs. Robert (Doris) Vensel; and a great-grandson.

Grace A. Bortz
Greenville church member worked at printing company

Funeral will be Thursday for Grace A. Bortz, West Salem Township, formerly of 175 W. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township. She died at 6:50 p.m. Monday (8-7-00) in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. She was 96.

Mrs. Bortz was born Aug. 30, 1903, in Greenville to Harry Walter and Carrie Malinda Rodemoyer Bortz.

She attended the former Porter School, West Salem Township; and for many years was employed by the former Beaver Printing Co., Greenville.

Mrs. Bortz was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63; and Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 47, all Greenville.

Her husband, Alfred M. Bortz, whom she married June 18, 1923, died Nov. 14, 1963.

Surviving is a sister, Bertha M. Weigel, Greenville.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Greenville native was retired postal clerk in Franklin

SUDBURY, Ontario, Canada -- Judith Lynn Cope, Oil City RD 1, died Monday (8-7-00) in St. Joseph Health Center as a result of a boating accident. She was 42.

Mrs. Cope was born May 13, 1958, in Greenville to Albert and Ruth Varner Lasch.

She retired as a window clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, Franklin.

Mrs. Cope loved animals, camping, traveling and hunting.

Surviving are: her husband, Richard E. Lowry Jr., Dempseytown, Venango County; a daughter, Mrs. Chad (Gwen Neal) Doyle, Franklin; three brothers, Larry Hovis, Albion, Pa.; Glen Hovis, Tulerosa, N.M.; and Albert Lasch, Williamsburg, N.M.; three sisters, Mrs. Richard (Kimberly) Magee, Grove City; and Linda Newbrough and Penny Winkler, both Williamsburg; three half brothers, Ronnie Lasch, Reynolds; Todd Lasch, Sharon; and Albert Lasch; two half sisters, Dorothy Lasch, Sharon; and Autumn Lasch, Erie; and a grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

New Castle man attended New Wilmington schools

NEW CASTLE -- Anthony Michael DeRosa, 915 Loraine Ave., New Castle, died Tuesday morning (8-8-00) in St. Francis Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Monday evening (8-7-00) in Shenango Township, Lawrence County. He was 22.

Mr. DeRosa was born Dec. 19, 1977, in New Castle to Edward and Beverly Long Lightcap.

He attended schools in New Wilmington and was employed for two years by Ben Rozzi Construction, Mahoningtown, Pa.

Mr. DeRosa was a member of Cultural German Society, New Castle; and Lawrence County Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education.

He enjoyed drawing and painting.

Surviving are: his parents, New Castle; his grandparents, Ruth Long, New Castle; and George and Helen Lightcap, Sandy Lake; and a sister, Jeanne Lightcap, New Castle.

Joseph M. Sangregorio
GATX worker was Army veteran, post quartermaster

Funeral will be Thursday for Joseph M. Sangregorio, 420 Westinghouse Blvd., Hermitage. He died at 4:08 p.m. Monday (8-7-00) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following surgery. He was 66.

Mr. Sangregorio was born May 6, 1934, in Sharon to Matteo and Maria Yanelli Sangregorio.

A 1952 alumnus of Brookfield High School, he played trumpet for the high school band.

Mr. Sangregorio was employed for 22 years by General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he was a roll operator; and was currently a driver for eight years for Medical Logistics Inc., Sharon.

An Army veteran, he served on the rifle team and was a charter member of Italian-American War Veterans Post 25, Farrell, where he served as quartermaster.

He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

Mr. Sangregorio enjoyed golfing and bowling and was one of the oldest bowling members of the Shenango Valley Tavern League.

He was an avid sports fan.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Rosemary Yankovich, whom he married May 22, 1965; a son, Jeffrey, at home; two sisters, Mary Lou Krantz, Hermitage; and Pauline Koch, Lady Lake, Fla.; and two brothers, Dominic and Albert, both Brookfield.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe; and a sister, Carmello.

Viola L. Thompson
Longtime WM resident was nurse, women's clubs officer

Viola L. Thompson, 3620 Lamor Road, Hermitage, formerly of West Middlesex, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday (8-8-00) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a lengthy illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Thompson was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Sharon to George and Mabel Fruit Gilson.

A 1933 alumna of Sharon High School, she graduated in 1937 from the nursing school of the former Christian Buhl Hospital, Sharon.

Mrs. Thompson retired in 1975 after 16 years as a pediatric nurse for what is now Sharon Regional Health System.

She was a charter member and first president of Mercer County Nursing Association, an affiliate of Pennsylvania Nursing Association.

Mrs. Thompson taught home nursing classes for the American Red Cross; and was a life member and past matron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156, Farrell; past president and charter member of West Middlesex Women's Club; and past president of Mercer County Federation of Women's Clubs.

Mrs. Thompson also belonged to Presbyterian Church of West Middlesex.

She lived in West Middlesex for the last 50 years until moving in with her granddaughter, Monica Blaus, whom she reared, and grandson-in-law, Brent Blaus.

Her husband, Samuel Dunham Thompson, whom she married in 1939, died April 29, 1994.

Surviving besides Monica are: three daughters, Christa Swartz, Sheffield Lake, Ohio; Marna Hoffman, Bay Village, Ohio; and Sandra Geiwitz, Sharon; a sister, Beatrice Martinko, Hermitage; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sara "Sally" Gilchrest.
